【摘要】:Hydraulicallyactivatedstationarypistonsamplersareusedtogathersoilsamplesforlaboratoryorfieldtestingandanalysisforgeologicinvestigations,soilchemicalcompositionstudies,andwaterqualityinvestigations.Thesamplerissometimesusedwhenattemptstorecoverunstablesoilswiththin-walledtubes,PracticeD1587,areunsuccessful.Examplesofafewtypesofinvestigationsinwhichhydraulicstationarypistonsamplersmaybeusedincludebuildingsitefoundationstudiescontainingsoftsediments,highwayanddamfoundationinvestigationswheresoftersoilformationneedevaluation,wetlandcrossingsutilizingfloatingstructures,andhazardouswastesiteinvestigations.Hydraulicallyactivatedstationarypistonsamplersprovidespecimensnecessarytodeterminethephysicalandchemicalcompositionofsoilsand,incertaincircumstances,containedporefluids(seeGuideD6169).Hydraulicallyactivatedstationarypistonsamplerscanproviderelativelyintactsoilsamplesofsoftorlooseformationmaterialsfortestingtodetermineaccurateinformationonthephysicalcharacteristicsofthatsoil.Samplesofsoftformationmaterialscanbetestedtodeterminenumeroussoilcharacteristicssuchas;soilstratigraphy,particlesize,moisturecontent,permeability,sheerstrength,compressibility,andsoforth.Thechemicalcompositionofsoftformationsoilscanalsobedeterminedfromthesampleifprovisionsaremadetoensurethatclean,decontaminatedtoolsareusedinthesamplegatheringprocedure.Field-extrudedsamplescanbefield-screenedorlaboratory-analyzedtodeterminethechemicalcompositionofsoilandcontainedporefluids.Usingsealedorprotectedsamplingtools,casedboreholes,andproperadvancementtechniquescanhelpintheacquisitionofgoodrepresentativesamples.Ageneralknowledgeofsubsurfaceconditionsatthesiteisbeneficial.Theuseofthispracticemaynotbethecorrectmethodforinvestigationsofsofterformationsinallcases.Aswithallsamplingmethods,subsurfaceconditionsaffecttheperformanceofthesamplegatheringequipmentandmethodsused.Forexample,researchindicatesthatcleansandsmayundergovolumechangesinthesamplingprocess,duetodrainage.Thehydraulicallyactivatedstationarypistonsamplerisgenerallynoteffectiveforcohesiveformationswithunconfined,undrainedshearstrengthinexcessof2.0tonspersquarefoot,coarsesands,compactgravellytillscontainingbouldersandcobbles,compactedgravel,cementedsoil,orsolidrock.Theseformationsmaydamagethesampleorcauserefusaltopenetration.Asmallpercentageofgravelorgravelcuttingsinthebaseoftheboreholecancausethetubetobendanddeform,resultinginsampledisturbance.Certaincohesivesoils,dependingontheirwatercontent,cancreatefrictiononthethin-walledtubewhichcanexceedthehydraulicdeliveryforce.Somerockformationscanweatherintosoftorloosedepositswherethehydraulicallyactivatedstationarypistonsamplermaybefunctional.Theabsenceofgroundwatercanaffecttheperformanceofthissamplingtool.Aswithallsamplingandboreholeadvancementmethods,precautionsmustbetakentopreventcross-contaminationofaquifersthroughmigrationofcontaminatesupordowntheborehole.RefertoGuideD6286onselectingdrillingmethodsforenvironmentalsitecharacterizationforadditionalinformationaboutworkathazardouswastesites.1.1Thispracticecoversaprocedureforsamplingofcohesive,organic,orfine-grainedsoils,orcombinationthereof,usingathin-walledmetaltubethatisinsertedintothesoilformationbymeansofahydraulicallyoperatedpiston.Itisusedtocollectrelativelyintactsoilsamplessuitableforlaboratoryteststodeterminestructuralandchemicalpropertiesforgeotechnicalanden......
